Update

With Christmas almost upon us and theend of 2011 I thought it beneficial to have a look at where we have
been and outline what is the plan forward. It was great to see so many new
sailors at the  Regional champs and how the sailing skills developed
from this event.Declan has the first individual coach assessment for the sailors that have committed to the coaching
program. Please pass them on to your parents so they can see where their dollars are going.I am sure you will agree that the
Rainbow racing on club days has done wonders to our new sailors confidence in racing and we look forward to seeing them step up into
the green fleet.

We have had a number of sailors take ownership of their own fibreglass boats and it is rewarding to see
the jump in the sailors  progress, once they have “Their own Boat”

Starlings we are proposing, dates to be confirmed, a Clinic with a  YNZ coach and 2 straight days of
coaching. This was a great benefit to all last year, except the lack of good wind.

With Christmas School Holiday's all but here the Coaching schedule will change .

Training will be more concentrated and longer. The length could be up to 3  /4 hours depending on the fleets
ability  and weather conditions
. This will allow us to make the most of the wind. Please have a word to Declan at the beginning of
the session if you need to tell parents what time to pick you up.  Attached is a schedule but as always please check your e-mail for
changes. I am where possible keeping the website updated with this info

There are two clinics with YNZ coaches and there may be a small fee to cover some of there costs. I
encourage you to take advantage of these.

Declan will be available for one on one coaching  when not in formal coaching Please contact Declan
directly to book this session.

Up coming Regattas and events

SIAG South Island Age group is being held at Charters bay on the 4th and  5th February.
This will be a regatta that the club will be attending. We will be taking Scott as our coach for this. If you want to know more or are
thinking of going please let Declan or myself know so we can look at transport and boat requirements.  Last year we took some 15 sailors
to this event
Pre Nats are on the same weekend and Declan will be coaching there. Please co-ordinate with Richard
for this event
Timaru Age Group Champs 18th and 19h February, this will be a good regatta as it will
give some open water experience prior to the South Island Champs.

Interislander Optimist Champs / South Island Champs 24thth 25thth 26th
February, hosted by QCYC at Picton. This is the big regatta and fund-raiser for the club This should have about 80 open fleet
Optimists racing outside Mabel Island in an 11 race series. There is expected 50 Green fleet racing on the inner harbour on the 25th and
26thh If you are not looking at travelling to away regattas and want to compete in a big regatta this is not to be
missed. Declan will be formatting coaching to build up to this event. As it is a big undertaking for the club we need lots of help and we
will be asking how you can assist. Please keep this weekend and (Friday the 24th if possible)  free for this event.

Kaiteriteri Picnic Regatta 10th - 11 March This is a fun
regatta where the club goes and stays at Kaiteriteri for the weekend. We join Nelson have some races and enjoy ourselves both on the water
and socially. Great event to bring the family Good Social team / club building event

Optimist Nationals April 5thth to 9thnd “ Easter” See Richard as he is
co-ordinating this event.

To Sum up forward as a club focus and a guide to what we are doing and sending coaches to

  • Siag  (South Island Age Group)  Charters Bay
  • Pre Nationals ( Same weekend as  SIAG)
  • Interislander Optimist In Picton
  • Kaiteriteri Picnic Regatta
  • Optimist Nationals at Easter

As always have a chat to any of us more weathered ones that look like we have done it before and we always do
our best to get sailors to events, share accommodation transport etc. If a Sailor really wants to go we do our utmost to help. When
travelling the costs for the coach and support boat are shared amongst the sailors going to the event

Basically if you have a look and think about what you want to achieve for the rest of the season and give
Declan an indication
Your goal may be “ To sail Open at inter island Opti”  or “ I want to sail Green at South Island
Champs” or “ I want to sail all the Club Races and go to Kaiteriteri”  we can ensure the coaching is planned towards
achieving the goals you set for yourself.

A couple of small house keeping matters.
  • You must not leave any of  your equipment in the centre of the opti shed. I have seen sails
left there please do not as they will get damaged.
  • Also boat trollies are not being  hung up as they should please keep the area tidy
  • Please remember to be ready at the  start time for training as we want to start in a timly manner

Green Fleet Guidlines
I have been talking to NZIODA and others on this and the general policy on this is a bit flexible.
  • General guidelines are not to of been sailing more than 2 years, but if a
sailor started at 7 years old and is  10 yrs , 30kg  and not too confident it is
accepted that they can sail green
  • Skippers that are in the top part of their fleets
and can handle the open fleet should be moved to open fleet
  • If they have been placed in the top half of the
fleet at a National event should not sail Green. While the initial concept here
was the "Nationals" if a sailor places well at a South island Championship ,
North Island  Championship or a ranking Regattas they should seriously look at
    open fleet
  • The object is to get the sailors to be comfortable
and sail open fleet where their skills will develop faster with the
    challenge with the bigger fleet.
  • If they are able to handle the challenge of Open
fleet they should be there, for the benefit of their sailing and racing
    skills

If we look at the guidelines for the 2011 Nationals Green Fleet
It is expected that Green Fleet Sailors will:

  • be 12 years and under;
  • Have sailed for less than 2 seasons;
  • Have finished outside of the top 40 in the Green Fleet at the
    2010 North Island Championships

NZIODA will refuse an entry from a
sailor who they believe should be entered in the “Open”
Championship
There was issues at Nationals last year where some
sailors skills and achievements clearly indicated they should be sailing open
but wanted to sail green. There was an amount of intense discussion.
There is an expectation on the clubs to make sure
they are in the fleet the sailors should be

Regional Champs are this weekend  coming.  5th and 6th November
This is a big regatta for our club and a good chance for perhaps your first regatta
A couple of things to remember,
If you pull out of racing you MUST inform the Start Boat or Support Craft. This is a safety requirment. If you do not follow it may result in a DSQ.
Also sailors, it is really appriciated when you thank the start boat at the end of racing for the day. Small things make a big difference   Laughing

Well done to the Rainbow who competed on Saturday, Connor and Nick , hope you enjoyed the brisk wind  Laughing

Green fleet, we will see some hot competition, looking at the racing between Max Gibbs, Jack Tripe, Oliver Crowley and Jessica Cameron on Saturday.  Remember last year Nick won the Green fleet at Regionals so you guys should be hunting to retain this for QCYC this year.

Declan Burn will be joining us as coach at the regionals so together with Scott Fyfe there will be a full time coach looking after the Green Fleet and the Outside Fleet for Regionals

Keep checking the Blog and time table to keep up to date
